"She believed she could, so she stole second."

History of the Glen Cairn Ladies Softball League (GCLSL)

The Glen Cairn Ladies Softball League (GCLSL) has become a cornerstone of community and sport since its inception in 1969-70. What started as a small pickup league became a vibrant community institution. From its humble, makeshift fields to today’s games at the Jack Charron and AY Jackson diamonds, the league has grown while staying true to its roots—bringing women together for fastball, friendship, and fun.

Since 1970, the GCLSL has welcomed women aged 19 to their sixties, fostering camaraderie and sportsmanship among its 130 players each season. Beyond the physical and mental challenges of fastball, the league emphasizes teamwork, resilience, and a positive attitude.

Generations of families have participated, creating bonds that transcend the game. The GCLSL has stood the test of time, a testament to the enduring love for Fastball and the passionate community behind it.

Milestones Through the Decades

 1960s

  • The Glen Cairn community in Kanata was developed on former farmland.
  • In the late 1960s, the league began as a casual pickup group, playing on a vacant lot at Abbeyhill and Old Colony, where the Glen Cairn United Church now stands.

1970s

  • In the early 1970s, four teams were formed with playful names like the Swinging Sweethearts and the Power Puffs. The draft was an informal affair held at someone’s home, where team numbers and players were drawn from a hat.
  • Equipment was minimal—just one bag passed between teams. Fields lacked proper maintenance, often requiring players to prepare them before games.
  • By the late 1970s, the league had grown, with tournaments moving to September to maximize participation.

1980s

  • In the early 1980s, the final game was played at the original Abbeyhill field.
  • Games expanded to include the AY Jackson High School diamond alongside the Jack Charron diamond.

1990s and 2000s

  • Position-based drafts were introduced in the early 1990s, marking a shift in the league’s structure.
  • The league embraced change, including hiring carded umpires and mandating helmets in 1992—a controversial move that highlighted the league’s commitment to player safety.
  • Registration opened to all Ottawa residents following amalgamation in 2001.
  • 2007: Carolyn Richardson made history with the league’s first hit over the fence, commemorated in the "Over the Fence" cookbook.
  • The introduction of themed year-end parties and videos, starting with 2006's Field of Dreams, brought creative celebration to the league’s events.

2010s

  • The league saw an influx of skilled players, raising the level of competitiveness.
  • Social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram became key to connecting players and promoting events.
  • In 2019, the league unveiled a new logo to commemorate its 50th anniversary, designed by former league member Wendy Russell.

Traditions and Community Impact

Mothers and Daughters

The GCLSL is unique for its multi-generational participation. Families have passed their love for fastball through generations, building a rich legacy.

Support and Connection

From donating to cancer research to supporting teammates through life’s challenges, the GCLSL has consistently fostered a culture of care and generosity.

Recognition and Awards

Milestones like the Lynne Heaslip Award, initiated in 1998, honor members who embody the league's spirit of dedication and community.

Fundraisers and Outreach

Initiatives such as potlucks, tournaments, and themed events have strengthened bonds within the league while supporting the broader community.

Looking Back and Moving Forward

From its early days of hand-shoveled diamonds and shared equipment to its current thriving format, the GCLSL has been a space for women to grow, compete, and connect. It’s more than a league; it’s a tradition, a network, and a testament to the power of community. As we celebrate 50+ years of history, we honor the hundreds of players who have shaped this league and look forward to many more decades of fastball and friendship.
